# The Condenser - Driving Blade Rotation

For HVAC dampers, every blade must move on the same action. This synchronized movement is the key to HVAC zone control. Linkage connects every blade together, so that all blades rotate at the same time. What drives the rotation?

The answer to that question is actuators.

The damper’s actuator provides the rotary force for the blades. As we discussed [in previous blogs](https://newsstand.mcdlg-hvac.com/actuators-making-adjustments), actuators are tied to the axle of the damper’s driving blade. The driving blade axle extends past the damper’s jamb to attach the actuator.

![A control damper with the driving blade highlighted](https://newsstand.mcdlg-hvac.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Images/Blogs/Condenser%20Articles/MCDLG%20Blog%202026%20-%20The%20Condenser%20-%20Driving%20Blade%20-%20Highlighted%20Blade.webp?width=402&height=501&name=MCDLG%20Blog%202026%20-%20The%20Condenser%20-%20Driving%20Blade%20-%20Highlighted%20Blade.webp)

An extended shaft kit will further extend the axle past the frame, providing more room for the actuator. Certain actuators will require an extended shaft to achieve the necessary torque.

Think of the driving blade as the “primary blade” of the damper. When the driving blade moves, all other blades move with it. The actuator will be attached to this blade only. The linkage of the damper will rotate all the blades in the damper. Even in dampers with opposed blades, all the blades will rotate on the same action.

How do you know which blade is the driving blade? Manufacturers will often mark the driving blade. If you don’t see the mark, we recommend designating the second lowest blade as the driving blade. In other words, consider attaching the actuator to the blade just above the bottom blade.

When designing the damper, you can choose which blade will be the driving blade based on what works best for your application.

*Extended shaft kits extend the driving blade axle, providing more space for the actuator to hold the axle.*

The second to last blade is typically the best option for mounting, because the actuator will fully engage the damper’s linkage and the actuator will be near the bottom of the damper. This design provides a lower center of gravity and places less strain on the damper’s frame when the blades rotate.

The driving blade drives rotation, for opening and closing. The actuator needs to rotate only one blade for all the blades to move.
