Did you stick to your damper maintenance schedule? Take a few minutes and read why maintaining dampers is important.

As the year winds down, you may feel like you've forgotten something. There are a lot of items to manage in a building, and some things may slip through the cracks. We’ve brought it up in previous articles, but here is an important reminder. Don’t forget to maintain your dampers!

Have you kept up with your damper maintenance schedule? It’s important to perform maintenance actions on a regular basis. Here are a couple of quick tips for performing maintenance and why they are important.

Stick to the Schedule!

Control dampers should receive maintenance on a semi-annual basis. At MCDLG, we recommend servicing dampers every six months to keep them in top condition. Check with the manufacturer’s literature for their suggested maintenance routine.

Make sure you have a place to track your maintenance schedule for each damper. It is best practice to keep a schedule for each damper, which tracks the services performed and the date of the service.

A regular maintenance schedule ensures every damper is in working order. Check in regularly to make sure there are no issues.

Clean and Maintain!

Dampers perform their best when they are clean. It may seem excessive, but regular cleanings can help with the damper’s lifespan. Bring lint-free cloths when completing maintenance.

Wipe dust and grime away from the blades and other moving parts. For tougher spots, use a detergent or solvent as directed by the manufacturer’s maintenance documentation.

Clean parts move freely with no resistance. This ensures your damper operates at its peak throughout the year. It can also improve the longevity of the damper and its components. For example, a gritty blade axle can be more difficult to turn. It can also wear down internal components over time.

Keep your dampers in peak condition with a regular maintenance schedule. Record what you do and make note of the date. It may help to stagger your schedule, so you don’t have to service dampers across your entire HVAC system. Your system could have hundreds of dampers.

Keep a schedule and keep it manageable. Regular maintenance goes a long way to improving your dampers and your HVAC system.
